Since being founded in 2010, On has relied on its distinctive CloudTec cushioning to make its footwear comfortable and supportive. In 2023, the brand revealed a new version of this innovative technology on the On Cloudsurfer running shoe.

The Cloudsurfer’s unique midsole was created using a computer-generation process known as Finite Element Analysis, which helps designers to choose the best materials and mould them into the optimal shape for runners. On the Cloudsurfer, this resulted in a CloudTec Phase midsole made from soft, flexible, energy-returning Helion superfoam. Oblong-shaped openings have been placed like dominos along the length of the sole, with the effect that each one compresses and locks into the next as the foot rolls forwards, providing adaptive comfort and a smooth transition from heel to toe.

This cushioning supports the foot in such a way that the brand’s structural Speedboard is no longer required, thus making the On Cloudsurfer light and airy. The midsole also maintains a pleasant softness, while its neutral construction works with the natural motion of the foot to protect the wearer when running on hard surfaces. The rubber outsole features a complex network of grip lines for excellent traction alongside a deep groove down its centre that drops yet more weight from the overall design.

The upper of the Cloudsurfer is a lightweight, flexible mesh made from recycled textiles. It offers good levels of breathability and a comfortable fit thanks to the snug contours of the midfoot and the sturdy heel counter. When added to the standard lacing, this produces firm lockdown. The well-padded tongue prevents any pain from lace pressure, and the thick band of fabric running along it serves to further secure the laces while also acting as a pull tab at the top.

These elements all bring a refined style to the On Cloudsurfer, which has a classy, minimalist aesthetic, with delicately embroidered accents and subtle branding effects alongside a bolder set of text on the tongue tab.

Since it was first released in a variety of elegant colourways in 2023, several variants have been added to the Cloudsurfer collection. The Next model incorporates the same set of supportive components with the addition of a forefoot rocker to help the runner roll even more seamlessly through each step. Meanwhile, the Trail edition has more rugged features built for trail running, including a powerful Missiongrip outsole and extra cushioning, and its Trail Waterproof counterpart has a special membrane which protects its upper in wet conditions.

The On Cloudsurfer launched a whole new type of midsole, helping athletes to achieve a flowing motion that feels like running on clouds. With its minimalist look and smooth step, this stylish road running shoe makes daily exercise fun and easy.
