Wildhorse

In early 2014, Nike reinvigorated its trail running lineup with two silhouettes. One of these is the Wildhorse – a tough all-round shoe built for moderate-paced training, mixed-terrain ultramarathons and everything in between.

The original Nike Wildhorse is low-profile and lightweight, with soft Phylon cushioning, springy heel Zoom Air and a compelling minimalist aesthetic. Its 4mm drop gives control and stability, and the densely packed lugs on its rubber outsole provide multi-surface traction. The breathable ripstop nylon upper has just a few durable synthetic overlays, while its Dynamic Fit midfoot wrap and gusseted tongue work with the secure lacing system to create firm lockdown.

In 2015, the Wildhorse 3 made the series far more rugged, introducing heavy duty mesh and welded panels alongside a hard-wearing outsole and protective forefoot rock plate. Updated Flywire lacing offers better containment, especially when added to the sturdy heel counter, and its 8mm drop and impressive midsole stack indicate a shift towards greater cushioning. Allied with its improved durability, this allowed Nike trail runners David Laney and Tim Tollefson to wear the Nike Wildhorse while competing in the UTMB World Series.

While 2019’s Wildhorse 5 removed the Flywire cables and added a convenient heel loop, 2020 saw the Nike Wildhorse 6 introduce alterations including a sturdier toe bumper, a debris-blocking ankle gaiter, a secure new lacing system and segmented tongue padding to prevent lace pressure. Without Zoom Air, lightweight, responsive, shock-absorbing React foam takes care of cushioning alongside an eye-catching heel saddle that cradles and centres the foot. Meanwhile, its segmented rock plate is lightweight and flexible, its outsole has anti-clog lugs that improve grip and durability, and its medial flank debuts Nike’s memorable Trail logo.

In 2023, the Wildhorse 8 welcomed improvements such as a new midfoot saddle for high-quality lockdown and supportive midfoot guide rails to control lateral stability. Deep chevron lugs and a varied tread pattern deliver better wet-weather traction, while its enhanced forefoot rock plate is also more effective. Lastly, it incorporates shimmering reflective elements and distinctive topographical patterns for a stylish look.

Nike launched the Wildhorse 10 in 2025 with cutting-edge ReactX foam for outstanding responsiveness, energy return and shock absorption. Highly durable All-Terrain Compound rubber forms the outsole, whose angular lugs bolster traction over challenging technical trails, while its new rocker shape adds propulsion and its reinforced eyelets and extended tongue loop elevate containment. Aesthetically, the Nike Wildhorse 10 blends subtle minimalism with a bold Trail logo that extends eccentrically across the medial flank. The silhouette was released with the help of long-time Nike trail runner Sally McRae, who describes it as “dependable” and “reliable: No matter the terrain or the weather”.

The Nike Wildhorse is a rugged trail running shoe offering powerful traction, solid containment, sturdy protection and responsive support over any distance, allowing the wearer to traverse diverse landscapes in confidence and style.
