990v1
Back in 1978, New Balance was a relatively small footwear company, but its designers had grand ambitions. They planned to create an exceptional running shoe better than anything else on the market at the time. It took them nearly four years to complete, and when they did, it surpassed the expectations of even the most optimistic minds.
Built at home in the United States, the New Balance 990v1 features a finely crafted mesh upper with premium suede panelling and the brand’s bold N logo placed on each flank. While this gives it a compelling look and comfortable feel, the technology of the sole unit provides excellent support. The midsole is formed from a slab of dual-density EVA foam for softness and bounce underfoot, and the hard-wearing Superflex outsole incorporates carbon rubber in the heel for extra durability.
Around the back of the shoe, a strong but flexible piece of polyurethane known as the Motion Control Device serves to protect the heel without reducing freedom of movement. Despite being invented in the early 1980s, this component remains effective to this day, as does every other aspect of the design.
On its release in 1982, the original New Balance 990v1 was decorated in a collection of neutral tones to match the urban colours of city streets, where many runners would practise their sport. Since then, the variety of styles has increased, but the construction has always remained the same – a remarkable endorsement of the enduring quality of this classy sneaker.
